About
Papra brings invoices, receipts, contracts and other files into a central archive. Organizations separate documents and members, while tags and full-text search help people find records without relying on folder names. Email intake imports attachments sent to a dedicated address. OCR and text extraction make scanned content searchable while preserving the original uploaded file. Tagging rules organize incoming records, and an API, webhooks, CLI and JavaScript/TypeScript SDK support custom workflows. Papra is open source under AGPL-3.0 and also offers a managed cloud service hosted in Europe.
Editor's note
A good fit for individuals and small teams that need a searchable archive and value control over deployment. It is archive-first rather than a collaborative document editor. OCR text is stored separately, so downloaded scanned PDFs do not gain a new searchable text layer. Self-hosting also means taking care of configuration, storage, backups and updates.

Frequently asked
- Can Papra read scanned documents?
- Yes. Built-in extraction uses OCR for images and scans, making extracted content searchable. Self-hosted deployments can also configure external extraction providers.
- Is Papra free?
- A hosted Free plan includes 512 MB and three members per organization. The AGPL-3.0 software can also be self-hosted without a software fee, although hosting costs remain.
- Does Papra change uploaded files?
- Papra preserves the original file. OCR text is used separately, so it does not rewrite the PDF or inject an OCR text layer into the original.
